Packing and Your First Move

Moving to a new house can be an exciting yet overwhelming experience, especially if it’s your first time as a homeowner. One of the most crucial aspects of the moving process is packing. To ensure a smooth and efficient move, here are some essential packing tips.

Start by decluttering your belongings.

Sort through your items and get rid of anything you no longer need or use it is important to be vigilant to the emotional desires to keep hold of impractical items. This will not only make packing easier but also help you create a fresh start in your new home.

Invest in quality packing supplies.Sturdy boxes, bubble wrap, packing tape, and markers are essential for keeping your belongings safe during transit. Label each box with its contents and the room it belongs to, making unpacking a breeze. You can get boxes from supermarkets, and you can also buy them from Ikea. Ask friends and family if they have any spare boxes, they may have boxes folded in their garage and it can save you a fortune.

Pack room by room.

Begin with the least frequently used areas of your home, such as the attic, basement or spare room. Gradually work your way through each room, ensuring that each box is packed efficiently and securely. Don’t forget the shed!

Protect fragile items. Wrap delicate items individually in bubble wrap or newspaper before placing them in boxes. Fill any gaps with packing peanuts, towels or bedding to prevent movement and breakage. Try not to overpack your boxes so the weight of the items cause the bottom of the box to break.

Consider hiring professional movers.

If you have a large number of belongings or heavy furniture, hiring professional movers can save you time, effort, and potential injury. Research reputable moving companies and book in advance to secure your preferred date. Contact me if you’d like an introduction.

Remember to pack an essentials box.

This box should contain items you’ll need immediately upon arrival, such as toiletries, a change of clothes, important documents, and basic kitchen supplies. Keep it separate from the rest of your belongings for easy access. Being able to walk through the door and make a cup of tea takes away a lot of the stress! Put the essentials box in the boot of your car so you can’t lose track of it.

Finally, stay organised throughout the packing process. Keep a checklist of everything you need to pack and cross items off as you go. This will help you stay on track and ensure that nothing gets left behind.
